TRIAL ONE
TRIAL
Once the various investigations have concluded, and the majority of the evidence has been dropped off with Makima and the ducks -- said ducks will scatter to start shepherding any travelers along to JojaMart, for some reason! Those already at JojaMart have a little less walking to do. Meantime, Makima has loaded the evidence onto the daycare wagon -- carefully packaged, because who wants a spill here -- and driven it off after the ducks.
There is, in fact, a back entrance to the JojaMart -- almost like a loading bay, but once it's opened and the wagon has been driven in, you can see that there's a small podium there along with a number of chairs and small tables. It looks like extra pieces used in either the Community Center or other areas around town may be stored here. The ceiling is tall and it's roomy, there's a scant few windows, but the white LED ceiling lighting and rather bare interior is only livened up by some larger spare whiteboards, extra shelving containing tools and knickknacks and a plant or two.
Once everyone is in -- Adela, Makima, a number of assistant ducks and the current inhabitants of the village -- the loading bay door is tugged closed by some enterprising assistants. There's a small door that probably leads into the front of JojaMart, but that's it. One of the ducks sets about serving tea in the slightly gloomy atmosphere.
You're welcome to examine the evidence in the wagon, discuss amongst yourselves, and figure out whodunnit in these first murders.
(( OOC: Welcome to your first trial! You'll have 7 hours (until 8 PM EST/5 PM PST) to vote one (1) person guilty of murder. As this is scapegoat style, a correct vote is not necessary. Please remember to vote unless otherwise discussed with the mods, as that is our AC for this game. ))
NPCs
Makima
First of all, I'm sorry to have to update you on the death of Keito Suou. That brings the total of murders this week to two -- which presents us with a dilemma. You're all a bit enthusiastic about this killing business.
[A small shake of her head.]
As the Sheriff, it pains me to do this on limited time and evidence, but we make do with what we can while the scene is fresh. Adela-chan has also requested that we minimize the amount of death in town, especially given we've already lost two of you... So we'll take 7 hours for you to continue to examine the evidence and discuss your decision amongst yourselves. You'll be voting for one individual that you determine to be the guilty party at the end of the day.
Please choose carefully. We'll be here if you need us.

mystery hammer(?) rod
anyways, it was mentioned that it resembled a hammer in shape, but thinner but when we say thinner do you just mean the head part (e.g. like a pickaxe)?
also composition-wise, is the whole object made of the same material or is the handle/rode part different compared to the head? does any of it look like it's copper?]

DISCUSS INVESTIGATION
Sampo's Body + The Boat
[ Yeah. ]
The right side of the back of Sampo's head endured a lot of blunt force trauma, to the point where his skull was dented and bloody. It looked like it could've been done with a large object, multiple blows, or both. Furthermore, there was a bruise on his forehead in a very straight vertical line, about an inch wide. There was nothing else of note anywhere else on his body.
However, I noticed that the bottom of his left shoe smelled like fish. There was a fish scale stuck to the sole, colored grey and blue. It was pretty small.
Nothing but his phone and his keys were in his pockets. ... I put his body over there, in case anyone wants to take a look.
[ Gestures at the Makima box... ]
It's worth noting that the fishing boat is small, and there was only room for two people in it. Sampo's body was positioned so his midsection was over the bench.
Weirdest part about the boat was that there wasn't a whole lot of blood in the boat. My guess is that he died elsewhere, and his killer placed him in the boat deliberately.

DRAG MARKS (Joja Mart Edition)
[She stands with her legs shoulder-width.] The path was wide; it cleared me easily even standing like this, and it looked like whatever was dragged down it was on the heavier. There was some blood along the path, but the mark was otherwise dry.
I'm pretty confident they were going from the mart to the pier, where the drag path stopped. I saw there were some others down in that area, so maybe that will answer some of their questions.
[Mio silently glances at Nikaidou here, a wordless look of concern. Hopefully he wasn't badly hurt.]

handwriting check
Um...if you guys could take some time to write down the words that Baldr found on the note? The words are "come," "favorite place," and "friend". There should be enough pieces of paper for all of you.
[ and, just to be a good example, he writes those words on a sheet of paper. ]

[ She'll write all three words, in that exact order! Her handwriting is nice and neat, looks like print rather than cursive or anything fancy. A little on the rounder side. ]

minor injury check
There's no need to disrobe, but I'd like for everyone to roll up their sleeves and their pants legs. I'll be looking over hands and faces as well.

EARTH RESULTS/Culprit Profile
Tentatively, I would include Dongrang as well, just because despite this he fits the profile of our culprit very well.
The reason I ask is that the method used to kill Keito-kun involved sealing him behind a wall. A reference to the Cask of Amontillado, a short story by a horror author known as Edgar Allan Poe, in which the victim is lured into a cellar by the host and is then shackled to a wall. He can do nothing but pleased for his life as his host seals him behind a wall.
Paired with the fact that all the fantasy layer people seem to be far more likely to not understand the concept of dry wall...
We have always had an extremely limited suspect pool. But I can reduce it further. The culprit's severing of limbs indicates an anatomical knowledge that makes up for their lack of upper body strength. They had to make multiple cuts, but they specifically targeted areas of the body that would be easier to cut. They used a weapon on the back of their target's head, aiming for his brain, indicating a lack of confidence in a straight up fight...
With only this dry wall, this level of reasoning is possible for Furudo Erika. What do you think, everyone?
no subject
[He gets it, but also, he is so fucking offended to be on that list.]
What would even be the motive? You have to be someone psychopathic to kill someone in that way instead of just stabbing them.

RESULTS
Makima herself is more or less impassive as she watches the slips come in -- we're doing this analog, because sometimes you need to be hands-on with this. She also tallies everything herself, quick and efficient with sorting paper.
Not long after the deadline, she'll stand (still on the wagon) and call for their attention.]
All the votes have been tallied. You've voted for Otonashi Sora as the guilty party. Votes were also cast for Lee, Reden, Dongrang, Enkidu, Furudo, Dioland, Mio, White... and Suou; it seems the room was quite split as to how to vote -- unsurprising, given how unexpected the situation has been. However, I'd urge you to be a bit more decisive, going forward. I would also like to remind you that invalid votes -- such as votes for the dead and blank vote slips -- will be counted as a vote for yourself.
[That's said more matter-of-factly than anything, the tone of a teacher giving a light touch of advice. She goes on more gravely.]
This was a tough case, but I believe you all did your utmost. Now, then... Otonashi Sora-kun, would you like to say a few words before we continue?
