WEEK THREE
WEEK THREE
19 Villagers
They say nothing is healthier for the mind and body than physical labor - especially if you can hold the fruits of it in your hands and store it in your kitchen. Whatever cruelties you have witnessed or endured in the past week, your fields need tending to and they reward you with as quick as harvest as always.
If drowning your grief in work is not enough for you, there are new spots to explore in Puffin Town. Allow the novelty to distract you from your dwindling numbers!
Always remember, the value of a community is not measured by it's size.
(( OOC: Murder proposals are due by Tuesday at 4 PM EST / 1 PM PST for this final week! Get your bloodthirst in or forever hold your peace! Gift submission is still open as well!
If your character has been planting Astera, here's a reminder to report it at the Astera tracker - this does not need to have been threaded, we're just taking stock on an OOC level.))

... I started thinking about doing this when we found out about the whole .... memory thing. Back then, we didn't know if it would get worse, so I thought ... No matter what someone did, it seems sad if we just forgot them, like they never existed.
I didn't really know any of them. [ maybe keito a little, that first week, but only him, and only for one week. ] So maybe I shouldn't be doing this at all, if I wasn't that close to them. But then, at the same time, I think... it's not really my place to decide who does or doesn't get to be remembered.
Being here at all is like we're... no, not forced. Coerced, right? It isn't— normal.
[ so maybe some of the victims or culprits might've been assholes. maybe what they did has nothing to do with the situation they're in here, and they would have done the same regardless of the terms hovering over them. but he can't judge them for things he doesn't know about, things that aren't here.
so. everyone gets a charm, victim or culprit. whether or not people leave it at that isn't up to vayne. ]

It's complicated, I suppose. On the one hand, sure, we're all victims. On the other... We found a guy hacked to pieces and stuffed into a wall. Bibi had her heart cut out of her chest.
[He sighs. The Venn diagram of empathy and naivety is a circle, sometimes. Someone around here should think about things like Vayne does, even Healy can admit that. It's just not gonna be him.]
I don't have any love for Sora or Beelzebub, but some of the others do. It'll matter to them. That's good.

or maybe he doesn't like to think of the person he'd be if he were more willing to condemn someone to not getting something as simple as this. he still seems to half expect censure for having left anything for the culprits, would be or not, after all. ]
... I don't expect everyone to forgive them. Or, I mean ... I don't expect anyone to. [ he says, emphasizing the expect as well. ] They can if they want ... but no one has to.
I still think they did some pretty awful things, after all. I'm not ... I'm not trying to erase that.

Right. It's about remembrance, not... I don't know. Honoring. Even murderers get headstones.
[He moves in to take a closer look at the ornaments.]
Did you do this kind of metalworking back home, too?
no subject
[ but he just nods in response to the rest. that's exactly it. even murderers get headstones... though, actually, when Healy comes in a little closer Vayne's brow furrows a bit as he gets a better look at the man's face. ]
... Oh. I think ... The ducks may have given me something of yours? Um, can you wait here, please...?
no subject
[The charms, he means.
But, oh. That makes two of them brow-furrowing. What could the ducks possibly have of his?]
Uh, sure. I'll stay put.
[And he will! He'll just keep inspecting the charms while Vayne runs off.]
no subject
[ in response to the compliment on his work or staying put? hard to say, because Vayne quickly darts off in the direction of the farms...
and comes back maybe 10, 15? however long it takes to cross the village minutes later, carefully holding something thin wrapped in a cloth, which Vayne will quietly offer to him. unwrapping it reveals... a framed picture of a woman and an older man, standing next to each other. it's probably clear why getting a better look at Healy reminded Vayne of it, since the man in the picture appears to have some resemblance to him. ]
I don't really know why I ended up with it, but... here you go, I think?

[He takes the photograph, holding it out at arm's length to get a look at it.]

The ducks gave that to you, huh? Little bastards.
[He holds up the frame to show Vayne.]
You want to know who that is? That [he points] is my father, and my ex-wife.
[He says it like a bad joke. In the photo, they're holding hands, so Vayne can probably guess where the "ex" part happened.]
Real cute.

... Do you, um. Want something to smash it with?

You know, I really would. Maybe a tall cliff to lob it off of.

Let's put it in the blacksmith forge.
