23 Villagers

Three people have fallen and a tower has risen. Along with it, some of the restraints on your mind have dispersed and a memory has returned to you - is it precious, is it painful? Is it cherished, is it loathed?

Mercilessly, dawn breaks on another morning. The rooster still calls, and the crops still need tending to. Rise and shine, Puffin Town! It seems like the residents are not the only thing that has chosen to rise, as a few more establishments have opened up for exploration. The sound of moo-ing near the farms may feel especially inviting here - how about making some new additions to your farms, to drown out your loneliness?

There is no festival just yet but if you question the ducks on it, some excited quacking will herald fun things to come later in the week. Some of the ducks will also wave the gift notes from last week; regardless of murder, being kind to your neighbors is still encouraged! Can't let our beautiful town sink into gloom and doom, right?

(( OOC: Murder proposals are due by Tuesday at 4 PM EST / 1 PM PST, for the current week's murder, but feel free to submit for later weeks if you like!

We have also added a page to report your Astera planting - this does not need to have been threaded, we're just taking stock on an OOC level.

Further, the Gift Mechanic has been updated. All turned in threads will now yield a character specific item as a reward! We're only dipping into the random gacha once all personalized rewards have been given out.))

[Mio gives him a single nod of understanding.] Don't feel like you have to push yourself.

Do you feel like it's more important to return to your home now?

[ He smiles at her, just a tad soft. Almost immediately, his frown returns. ]

I do. I know just how important it is to finish what I was doing back home. Not that I didn't before, but... it's different now.

[He's always been serious, but his frown inspires a similar expression to cross Mio's features. He may have regained something, but she can't help feeling like some happiness was also taken from him.]

What do you think about the timing?

[She'd really like to get Erika's thoughts on this, too...maybe she's even already gotten to the bottom of it, understanding everyone's losses and feelings.]

[Erika's quiet for now, but she does exchange a glance with Mio. She's certainly listening.]

[ Every inch, every milestone crossed, he's lost something. That a little bit of happiness was taken from him too... well, it's not that surprising. ]

It's quite motivating, isn't it? I already thought that the first drop of blood spilled would lead to more... and I don't think that this detracts from my theory. Quite the opposite.

[Mio worries the palms of her hands together, chafing away a sudden chill that's come through them. She just looks a little cold.]

Why now, do you think? To keep us afraid and in line? It might motivate someone who saw the deaths that already happened and couldn't stomach the thought of more.

[Any one of them could be a liar: That was clearly established by the end of last week. Even so... the impression that they're much less bloodthirsty than the last group of people here lingers.]

I don't know, honestly.

[ He frowns, shaking his head as he slips back into thought. ]

I wouldn't be surprised if someone thought that they might as well kill now, just because they wouldn't be the one kicking it off.

So just because someone else has done it, that makes it just fine? I can't respect that kind of dirt logic.

[She's genuinely irritated by that from the sound of it - that someone's convictions could slip so quickly and so loosely.]

We can't rule out that people will get bolder...but there's not even any evidence that it's working.

I hope you're right, Mio.

[ Unfortunately, Kurapika just isn't an optimist. ]

I'd like to think that the trial and execution would be a deterrent.

Even when 2B tried to change the course of the execution there was nothing she could do.

[Forced to give up so easily, Mio thinks bitterly, then reconsiders. She can't be certain it was giving up at all when it could have just been tactical attrition. More of them could have been hurt if the fighting went on... Instead, it was better to withdraw at the time. For all that Sora had done wrong, all Mio knows she never truly knew him, the thought of a necessary sacrifice sits uneasily.]

Seeing the kind of power Makima possesses might also be enough to keep people in line... or force them to be desperate.

We're all without our abilities while she has hers... I think it could lead to desperation.

[ It's terrifying, the prospect of going up against someone so much more powerful when you lack any real strategy. He'd understand anyone getting desperate. ]
