23 Villagers

Three people have fallen and a tower has risen. Along with it, some of the restraints on your mind have dispersed and a memory has returned to you - is it precious, is it painful? Is it cherished, is it loathed?

Mercilessly, dawn breaks on another morning. The rooster still calls, and the crops still need tending to. Rise and shine, Puffin Town! It seems like the residents are not the only thing that has chosen to rise, as a few more establishments have opened up for exploration. The sound of moo-ing near the farms may feel especially inviting here - how about making some new additions to your farms, to drown out your loneliness?

There is no festival just yet but if you question the ducks on it, some excited quacking will herald fun things to come later in the week. Some of the ducks will also wave the gift notes from last week; regardless of murder, being kind to your neighbors is still encouraged! Can't let our beautiful town sink into gloom and doom, right?

(( OOC: Murder proposals are due by Tuesday at 4 PM EST / 1 PM PST, for the current week's murder, but feel free to submit for later weeks if you like!

We have also added a page to report your Astera planting - this does not need to have been threaded, we're just taking stock on an OOC level.

Further, the Gift Mechanic has been updated. All turned in threads will now yield a character specific item as a reward! We're only dipping into the random gacha once all personalized rewards have been given out.))

[Someone's got to be a protagonist here, dammit. At the risk of losing this duck's faith in him, he'll try his best to decode it's message. Or like, play charades with it, apparently...]

[Significant strides in human-to-duck communication have been made on this day... Noah looks back at the scarecrow, concerned.]

Are you trying to say that you love the scarecrow?

[duckinghell]

[ The duck seems to consider that. Or maybe how to answer that? Who knows, but it's sure thinking about something.

After a moment, it shakes its head yes while keeping the heart shape, then shakes its head no while pointing to the scarecrow. ]

[No love for the poor scarecrow, huh? Rough. Noah brings his hand to his chin.]

Mm... Does the scarecrow not have a heart?

[Silly question, Noah mutters to himself, but this entire situation is a bit silly. Even so, the protag in him demands that he handles it earnestly.]

[duckinghell]

[ The duck tilts its head to the side.

It seems hesitant in some way, but nevertheless, it nods yes. ]

[Ah.]

Is that why you were trying to destroy it?

[duckinghell]

[ The duck nods once more, jumping up and down a few times. Looks like Noah has understood a little more about the complicated heart of this little duck.

Or maybe it just really wanted to burn stuff. Communication sure is hard without a shared language! ]

[He understands so much yet so little at the same time. At least he can count duck communication amongst his skills now.]

There are plenty of things around here that don't have a heart, unless you're trying to suggest that this scarecrow had one before. That's a bit morbid.

[duckinghell]

[ First off, it points towards the scarecrow remains.
Then it makes the heart shape again before crossing its wings over its chest and shaking its head.
And lastly, it leaves its little wings at rest on its side.

It's a lot, but it does seem to try to be earnestly communicating with him. ]

I'm a bit confused, but... let me hazard a guess. Do you have the scarecrow's heart?

[ The duck tilts its head to the side, thinking, thinking, thinking... ]

[ Suddenly, its eyes widen in shocked realization. And probably disbelief mixed in? That's all the warning Noah gets before the duck lets out an incredibly distressed sounding screech. ]

Quaaaaaaaaaaaack?!

[ It's now shaking its head no faster than it has done before. Not like that, not like that, not like that! ]

Sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to alarm you.

[He's still confused on the link between the scarecrows and the ducks, but at least Noah has eliminated... some possibilities here. Ow, his ears...........]

I have one last question for you, if you can manage to keep your volume down. Have you... always been a duck?

[duckinghell]

[ It tilts its head at that question, the very picture of a cute, inquisitive duck. ]

Quack?

...Maybe that was a silly question too.

[But what can you do when you're trying to, uh, understand a duck? Noah hums.]

I'm asking because you don't seem to behave in the way other beasts do. You're more humanlike, appearances aside. So... I don't know if such a thing is even possible, but perhaps you weren't always a duck?

[duckinghell]

Quuuack... Quackquack.

[ It's no longer doing the exaggerated gestures of just a few minutes ago. Now it's just staring at Noah, bobbing up and down as it stares back almost vacantly. ]

Hmm...

[So ducks can disassociate too...]

How's your memory? Does it feel a bit fuzzy, like you've forgotten anything?

[duckinghell]

[ It quacks with a quizzical tilt of its head. Looks like it doesn't comprehend Noah's questions. ]

Ah...

[Human-to-duck communications have broken down... Sadge... But Noah's thankful for the information regardless, bending down to offer the blue-sweatered duck a. Uh. Fistbump? Wingbump??]

On second thought, don't worry about it. I think I've pestered you quite enough already. I appreciate you, erm, speaking with me, though.

[duckinghell]

[ Sadge... ]

Quackquack. Quack. Quack.

[ Alas. It takes a moment for it to understand, but it does reach out for a, well, wingbump. Whatever all that was, it seems pretty calm and chill now. ]

[Good! If nothing else, they can communicate through wingbumps. Noah gives the little duck a pat on the head for good measure.]

[ The duck seems happy with the headpat, twirling in response before pointing to him. ]

[Noah also points at himself?? Is there something on his face...]

[Does his ducky friend... want to return the favor?]

[ It shakes it head no to that, but it does point at himself after. Looks sorta like a "leave it to me" gesture.

So maybe it does want to return the favor sometime, yes. ]
