WEEK TWO

23 Villagers

Three people have fallen and a tower has risen. Along with it, some of the restraints on your mind have dispersed and a memory has returned to you - is it precious, is it painful? Is it cherished, is it loathed?

Mercilessly, dawn breaks on another morning. The rooster still calls, and the crops still need tending to. Rise and shine, Puffin Town! It seems like the residents are not the only thing that has chosen to rise, as a few more establishments have opened up for exploration. The sound of moo-ing near the farms may feel especially inviting here - how about making some new additions to your farms, to drown out your loneliness?

There is no festival just yet but if you question the ducks on it, some excited quacking will herald fun things to come later in the week. Some of the ducks will also wave the gift notes from last week; regardless of murder, being kind to your neighbors is still encouraged! Can't let our beautiful town sink into gloom and doom, right?

(( OOC: Murder proposals are due by Tuesday at 4 PM EST / 1 PM PST, for the current week's murder, but feel free to submit for later weeks if you like!

We have also added a page to report your Astera planting - this does not need to have been threaded, we're just taking stock on an OOC level.

Further, the Gift Mechanic has been updated. All turned in threads will now yield a character specific item as a reward! We're only dipping into the random gacha once all personalized rewards have been given out.))

[Well, this is a quaint little stand. They’re not the sort of things he’ll pick up for himself, but it’s interesting to browse. But what really catches his eye are the gold bars, and there’s a raised eyebrow here as he addresses Vayne.]

Busy at the mines, or did you you find someone’s hidden stash?

I'm struggling with that, too. I already think I've come to know more than I ever thought I would about life and how people choose to spend their time. If only it were just that.

[Unfair, like a litany, has been playing the entire time they've been here. Whether it's the unfairness of their lives - short and brutal - or the unfairness of this place - idyllic and beautiful on the outside but slowly squeezing the hand of death around them nonetheless - both seem cruel. Dangle answers on a stick a few feet ahead of them, and then what? What are they supposed to do if their hands ever reach out and grasp those answers?]

It seems a bit trite to be saying this, especially given the things we've forgotten, but I want to remember this. I want there to be a record of it. [Maybe it's easier to sort her thoughts out with her eyes closed; Mio stays that way even as she speaks. Her hair lays flatter because of the humidity and steam, and Mio reaches up to slowly curl her fingers through it.] Not just for my sake, but so that no one forgets.

Do they? I've never had one before. [Even thinking of the cows as pets doesn't feel like the right thing in her mind.

Mio notes that he still filled out his papers, though, so she pushes the jar toward him so he can drop his suggestions in.]

Even if we're only meant to know each other for a short time, I think I should still know their names, so we can really say we've met.

The... ah, ducks actually brought these ones to me. I haven't actually gone looking in the mines for this kind of stuff yet...

Oh, I went down there with someone else last week. But um, we weren't really looking for this kind of stuff when we went...

If you mean the creatures living in there, though, then don't worry, I already know about them? And if you just mean getting stuck in there, then I'm actually kind of used to exploring places like that...

Anyway, I have the most practice with collars and rings, but bracelets and necklaces are fine too. Um, I can't say I've really done hairpins before, but I could probably try to figure it out...?

[This week, it's Mio who blasts everyone's phones with a short message.

Everyone.

It's been a few days, and I think the festival yesterday was well-needed. Thank you to everyone who came by. The calf's new name is Aster.

We're still dealing with a situation none of us expected thrust upon us. Let's meet at the movie theater at sundown. There's food and seating for everyone. The circumstances may seem more dire now, but I believe there are still more answers for us to find. Let's work together for as long as we can moving forward.

People who come by a little early will find Mio writing on some Joja stationery or reading, the normal braid in her hair loose and undone.]

This is unlikely to be an unpleasant topic for many, but we can only learn more by reviewing what we know about the memories regained a few days ago. It might also help us better understand any connections between what's been taken and why, so if anyone wants to share their observations, now would be the time.

I remembered something that contextualizes a lot of other things I knew to be true before I got the memory back. So, it was important, at the very least.

[Though the rest of the discussion has probably been sobering, this might add a little levity to the chat at the end of the day.]

Has anyone been receiving packages from the ducks that are a little more odd than the others? [They're all a bit odd, but a book is at least a book as compared to some of the things that have been unwrapped.]

I'd love to pass along what I've received so someone else might get some joy out of it, but I don't see how anyone's desperate to be handed a paper crown.

Maybe this is more a hobby then, and alchemy is your passion? [she tries. There's genuine appreciation in her voice, at least, for him being so talented across several different spheres.]

The materials in the tower do seem a little...specific. [She hasn't spent that much time there, and yet the things Mio saw certainly look like they follow a strange set of logical rules, like crops that grow so quickly. But not spirits that demand blood - that one seems strangely believable when paired with some other circumstances.] Do you think the stuff you usually do would work in a place like this, or is it like our other skills?

[ In the morning before the meeting, Kurapika spends a good amount of time at Flame Lily Farm, outside and tending to his plot. He's focused and very methodical in tending to it, looking over his growing strawberries and rhubarbs, as well as digging up some of his potatoes from the earth. He looks up from dusting some dirt off of one of his potatoes. ]

I have some to spare, if you want one.

[ After the meeting, Kurapika stops by the food vendors, taking his sweet time poking his head into just about every booth before finally stopping at the noodle stand. ]

Broth most would kill for, huh?

[ Honestly, he's not bothered by it. Hopefully it's good.

And then to cap off his evening... Kurapika's nerdy self is of course at the wizard's tower. It doesn't take long for him to accumulate a pile much bigger than the one he had a the community center on that first day, books about spirits and alchemy just about piled up all around him as he settles in to read. ]

That's okay~ I think we all have fruit or flowers, so consider this a... free sample? For a pretty girl~

[ it's a terrible joke tbh but he seems to know that he did make a terrible joke, because he laughs, and there's a flurry of activity as he picks up a new fresh sheet of paper and sketching pencils, starting to get a rough sketch of Amy done in her pose ]

[It also seems fine to Mio, apparently, because she doesn't intervene to take any of those items back off of him. She must be confident in his ability to multitask based on her content smile.]

Whatever the case, a little bit probably couldn't harm him, surely? He isn't super fragile? Still, since he's in your care, you should choose. I'm sure your heart will tell you what's best for him. [She can only imagine that Beelzebub would want to do his best for such a small creature dependent on him.]
