After the news from the town hall, Puffin Town might not seem as tranquil as before—if it ever did. But the sun dawns, and the rooster crows on a new week, that seems peaceful enough, for now. There's farming to be done for those who don't want to subsist off the vast canned food selection at Joja Mart, or you could take up your hand fishing or even venturing into the mines.

If you want to lay around on the grass taking count of the shapes in the clouds no one will stop you, an eager duck might even stop by to give you a pillow; but the cost of the harvest looms overhead, even if you choose not to see it.

And so too does: confetti? Monday, at precisely noon, everyone will find themselves showered with confetti from seemingly nowhere. The culprit largely seems to be the ducks, but if you're somewhere closed off like bathroom, there's no obvious instigator in sight. Though if you squint real hard, you might see the wisps of something? It's hard to see through all the colorful paper, though. Regardless, you'll soon find yourself accosted by a duck with a flyer, printed and worn:

Do you find the walls of your cottage drab? Do you want to add a special touch to make your home YOURS? Stop by the general store this week and pick up some art supplies to decorate your life! NOTE: Puffin town does not take responsibility for any damage incurred during the decorating process. Participation will be rewarded with an item from the community stockpile! Please see the event organizer in the community center to submit your polaroid photograph of your entry. (Polaroids are available at the general store.)

Maybe calling it a festival is a stretch, but it's certainly a group activity nonetheless. And hey, there's even prizes! The duck, ever eager, presses another paper into your hand, though this one is handwritten, in a cursive elegant hand.

I'm hardly going to attribute something that still has several possibilities for a scientific explanation as simple "magic". I'm not a fool.

Really? It looked similar, though not exact, to how we draw our weapons where I come from, so it wasn't all that odd to me.

... Rather, that's exactly why it was odd. [Because Mio obviously cannot call forth her Blade, the same as anyone else here who has found their abilities, magic or otherwise, to have been restricted.]

What? How does that work, some advanced sheathing technology?

[Well... Mio pauses a little; formulating an explanation for someone unfamiliar with her world is getting easier, but there are so many things she once accepted as commonplace.] It's something like that, but our Blades are bound to us. We can call them into our hands when we need them.

And I'm guessing you don't have the device to do so now. Otherwise you'd be able to threaten those women easier.

Basically. I can't access any equipment or do anything that relied on it now. I still have my own physical ability, but you could say that Blades are innate to us, too, and it's just missing.

[There are a lot of things, the more Mio thinks about it, that were taken for granted as natural fact on Aionios. The way the world - the way life - worked was accepted by them all so easily.]

[Hm. Well. The differences between Ether and magic aside all mysteriously cut off by a very loud freight train going by in my brain, for some reason, Mio has to think that even if her own abilities are out of reach, someone more in line with Adela has to be among them.]

Has anyone heard more from her about it beyond that? Maybe it won't actually net us anything, but the more we learn about what transpired since they arrived here, the more information we have for ourselves.

I can imagine this would all turn out considerably worse if everyone had full access to their... "powers."

[Frustrating! Her magic powers are the best method to disproving the existence of magic!]

It's worth asking about.

I do think people might be more likely to fight if they had access to their usual abilities. In that way alone, it might be for the best.

[Though this is said with a bit of regret, still - even if avoiding a full-scale war to raze the town to the ground is preferable, it's difficult not to feel like something's missing from her.]

They both have their own buildings in town - places that seem made for them. That sort of thing could be done in a month, though, don't you think?

Mhm. It's a little odd, but certainly possible. The only thing I'd question is how and why they found the time to do such a thing in such a fraught situation.

Although to hear Makima-senpai tell it, it sounds like they only discovered this method on accident.

[She unfolds the festival flier that she's been keeping in the pocket of her half-faded overalls.] It could have been something like this, maybe. Something that managed to stick around after the fact.

I wonder if there was some sort of conflict or some task like this, and it led to a fight.

Supposedly a border conflict between farms lead to a violent altercation and someone died in the process.

[why did she leave the forever war just to be transported to another stupider forever war]

A border conflict? [Mio repeats, sounding both incredulous and a little annoyed.] That sounds so unnecessary. If things were as they are now, there'd be no need to get into those kinds of skirmishes unless someone forced them to or unless they needed to start fighting over resources.

[People who are fighting to live see all the more reason to kill; anyone who gets in the way of that is an enemy.]
