After the news from the town hall, Puffin Town might not seem as tranquil as before—if it ever did. But the sun dawns, and the rooster crows on a new week, that seems peaceful enough, for now. There's farming to be done for those who don't want to subsist off the vast canned food selection at Joja Mart, or you could take up your hand fishing or even venturing into the mines.

If you want to lay around on the grass taking count of the shapes in the clouds no one will stop you, an eager duck might even stop by to give you a pillow; but the cost of the harvest looms overhead, even if you choose not to see it.

And so too does: confetti? Monday, at precisely noon, everyone will find themselves showered with confetti from seemingly nowhere. The culprit largely seems to be the ducks, but if you're somewhere closed off like bathroom, there's no obvious instigator in sight. Though if you squint real hard, you might see the wisps of something? It's hard to see through all the colorful paper, though. Regardless, you'll soon find yourself accosted by a duck with a flyer, printed and worn:

Do you find the walls of your cottage drab? Do you want to add a special touch to make your home YOURS? Stop by the general store this week and pick up some art supplies to decorate your life! NOTE: Puffin town does not take responsibility for any damage incurred during the decorating process. Participation will be rewarded with an item from the community stockpile! Please see the event organizer in the community center to submit your polaroid photograph of your entry. (Polaroids are available at the general store.)

Maybe calling it a festival is a stretch, but it's certainly a group activity nonetheless. And hey, there's even prizes! The duck, ever eager, presses another paper into your hand, though this one is handwritten, in a cursive elegant hand.

Yeah. It's people with presence like Ryou that are protagonists even outside of dreams.

Is that your best friend? I think I can understand that.

[ Oh. It's only now he realizes he didn't really make a distinction when talking about them. ]

—I like Ryou a lot, and I'm lucky to have someone so kind and noble as him willing to send letters to me. We may have only met pretty recently, but...he's a friend. And I'm thinking I want to know more about him, and what I can do to help him. Even if he's the type of protagonist who doesn't need my help.

But my best friend is MAMIYA. He's been there for me since my childhood...

[ He smiles at the memory of them both, but it's tinged with the loneliness of being able to see them. ]

Hmm, a new friend and a childhood friend. They must be very important to you. [ Was that a weird way of saying "Mamiya"? He won't ask, though. Keito-kun is a little weird anyway. And besides, he understands that loneliness very well. ] You must really want to be by their sides.

Yeah, I have a lot of stuff I want to say to them. I just can't leave it at...that. [ That being his last convesations with them. ] Isn't it the same with you and Hinata?

[ Actually, he's calling him Hinata-san without localization removing the honorifics, but that's just what happens without a full name. ]

Harusawa. Harusawa Hinata. It's very bright-like, isn't it? [ He smiles fondly but somberly. ] Of course. If I could wish for something, I'd like to be part of his family.

[ Or even a family, really... ]

Like a sunny spring morning! [ And he files that name away for later. ] And I think you should! Harusawa is a splendid last name.

[ But that does make him realize something. ]

Though I guess that means I wouldn't be able to call you Otonashi then.

[ .....? ] No, I don't mean it that way. It's more like... a childhood wish, sort of thing...

Oh, I thought Harusawa Sora sounded pretty neat though.

[ Who knows if this kid recognizes the implications??? ]

Eeh... what are you saying? [ He's really embarrassed, like he revealed a secret he didn't mean to, Keito-kun. ]

[ ??? ] You said you wanted to be part of his family, so isn't that part of it?

Yes, but... [ He didn't say anything about marrying him, okay. ] I don't need to take his last name. [ Well, he wouldn't want Hinata to have his last name either. ]

[ He didn't either! ] It's a pretty neat idea though? But that's just coming from me. You're the only one who can decide what you want to be called in the end, Otonashi.

That's true... [ Just stop talking about it like this. So, he's up for a little revenge? ] What about you then, Keito-kun, which of your friends' last name are you taking?

Huh? [ He tilts his head to the side, thinking. ] Why would they adopt me though?

I don't know. [ He's practically pouting. ] You started it.

[ ??? ] I guess I did? But I think they both have nice names. Ryou's brings up the image of picturesque chrysanthemum ponds that match his noble ambience, while the cadence of Mamiya's feels soft and warm to hear and say, like a familiar melody. I couldn't choose.

[ Is that answering the question? ]

[ ..... he laughs lightly, quite amused. ] Isn't your writing fine, if you can describe things like that?

Is it? I can't really tell if my thoughts are coming across clearly when I'm writing. Sometimes the tone of my words doesn't match what I was hoping for.

[ And he's the one who said it and all, but it does kind of come off as trite? ]

But those are the words coming out of your heart, right? [ It's that simple, isn't it? ]

It is, but...depending on the subject, sometimes I wonder if those words will just hurt him more.

How to say this...

[ He clams up for a while, obviously trying to pick and choose his words a little more carefully. ]

Without power behind them, even words with good intentions can become...irresponsible. So I'd...I'd have to become a reliable adult if I want my words to have weight behind them.
