WEEK ONE

WEEK ONE
26 Villagers

After the news from the town hall, Puffin Town might not seem as tranquil as before—if it ever did. But the sun dawns, and the rooster crows on a new week, that seems peaceful enough, for now. There's farming to be done for those who don't want to subsist off the vast canned food selection at Joja Mart, or you could take up your hand fishing or even venturing into the mines.

If you want to lay around on the grass taking count of the shapes in the clouds no one will stop you, an eager duck might even stop by to give you a pillow; but the cost of the harvest looms overhead, even if you choose not to see it.

And so too does: confetti? Monday, at precisely noon, everyone will find themselves showered with confetti from seemingly nowhere. The culprit largely seems to be the ducks, but if you're somewhere closed off like bathroom, there's no obvious instigator in sight. Though if you squint real hard, you might see the wisps of something? It's hard to see through all the colorful paper, though. Regardless, you'll soon find yourself accosted by a duck with a flyer, printed and worn:

!
Festival!

The Colors You Want to See Festival!
Do you find the walls of your cottage drab? Do you want to add a special touch to make your home YOURS? Stop by the general store this week and pick up some art supplies to decorate your life! NOTE: Puffin town does not take responsibility for any damage incurred during the decorating process. Participation will be rewarded with an item from the community stockpile! Please see the event organizer in the community center to submit your polaroid photograph of your entry. (Polaroids are available at the general store.)
Maybe calling it a festival is a stretch, but it's certainly a group activity nonetheless. And hey, there's even prizes! The duck, ever eager, presses another paper into your hand, though this one is handwritten, in a cursive elegant hand.

!
Gift Giving

Someone told me that receiving a gift is a reward in itself. But if you share with others, you deserve something tangible, don't you? Try it, you might be surprised at what you receive.
(( OOC: Murder proposals are due by Tuesday at 4 PM EST / 1 PM PST, for the current week's murder, but feel free to submit for later weeks if you like!))

Saloon

[Walter is sipping on a wine of choice himself, since hey, he's an American adult and there's a saloon, might as well. The only other older man also happens to be here at the time looking over one of the new phones.]

Those are probably bugged. Magic or no magic, those women aren't above surveillance if you ask me.

[Healy lets out a quiet hum and shrugs.]

I doubt I'll be using it much. Not really a gadgets guy. I just want to know how to use the damn thing.

[Seems an important skill, considering it's one of the few items they were pointedly given. He wiggles the phone at Walter.]

You know you can send messages? The keypad's got letters.
theotherww: (in a year)

[personal profile] theotherww 2024-03-06 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
...yes? Most cellphones have those.

[Walter gives Healy a confused look.]

Have you not seen one before?

[Please don't be another magic LARPer.]

Not in person. I saw on the TV that some phone company guy invented mobile telephones a few years back, but I figured it was a novelty thing. Those were giant suckers, though. Big, unwieldy things.

[He illustrates with his hands—he's talking about the big brick phones from the 70s.]

Neat that this one fits in your pocket, but it's too small. You've got to have tiny little thumbs to work these buttons. And god help you if you're farsighted.

[Which he is, as Walter might pick up from him holding the screen at arm's length so he can read it. RIP.]

...it's been decades since mobile phones were that large.

[Walter is around the same age as Healy, but he feels like he gets technology on a different level than this man does for some bizarre reason.

Perhaps...well, it's impossible, but if Erika's theory about their current reality stands, it doesn't care about what Walter knows is impossible.]

What year is it where you're from?

'77. Another guy said he was from 2009. Is that closer to you?

[He's taking this time travel thing in stride. It'd be a different story if they were stuck in some kind of sci-fi world like he's seen on Star Trek, but he can handle a flip phone.

Probably.]

[personal profile] theotherww 2024-03-08 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. The same year, actually. [What's the logical explanation? Maybe this man's a victim of extremely severe memory loss that encompasses several decades.]

You've missed a lot. We outlived the USSR but the music doesn't get any better.
rightmove: (healy80)

[personal profile] rightmove 2024-03-12 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. What a coincidence. Not from the same version of 2009 though, I take it?

[That seems to be a running theme around here.]

Which means maybe the Soviets outlive us in my world. Yippee. Who was president in your 1977? Carter?
theotherww: (suddenly)

[personal profile] theotherww 2024-03-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It could be the same, I'd have to compare notes.

[Walter is pretty sure whoever's from 2009 might have some wrong information, but whatever.]

Yeah, that one was Carter. Parallel universe theory says that could be one of the common factors.

[personal profile] rightmove 2024-03-13 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Parallel universe theory?

[ 🚨Nerd alert.🚨 ]

Are you like a physicist or something? You seem like the brainy type.
theotherww: (what you think)

Astrophysicists are still debating how legitimate the idea is given it's tied to speculation and philosophy more than provable facts.

I'm a chemist myself--there's enough to discover about our own reality that theorizing about alternate ones never appealed to me.

[Might as well put a "kick me" sign on this man's back.]
