After the news from the town hall, Puffin Town might not seem as tranquil as before—if it ever did. But the sun dawns, and the rooster crows on a new week, that seems peaceful enough, for now. There's farming to be done for those who don't want to subsist off the vast canned food selection at Joja Mart, or you could take up your hand fishing or even venturing into the mines.

If you want to lay around on the grass taking count of the shapes in the clouds no one will stop you, an eager duck might even stop by to give you a pillow; but the cost of the harvest looms overhead, even if you choose not to see it.

And so too does: confetti? Monday, at precisely noon, everyone will find themselves showered with confetti from seemingly nowhere. The culprit largely seems to be the ducks, but if you're somewhere closed off like bathroom, there's no obvious instigator in sight. Though if you squint real hard, you might see the wisps of something? It's hard to see through all the colorful paper, though. Regardless, you'll soon find yourself accosted by a duck with a flyer, printed and worn:

Festival!

The Colors You Want to See Festival!
Do you find the walls of your cottage drab? Do you want to add a special touch to make your home YOURS? Stop by the general store this week and pick up some art supplies to decorate your life! NOTE: Puffin town does not take responsibility for any damage incurred during the decorating process. Participation will be rewarded with an item from the community stockpile! Please see the event organizer in the community center to submit your polaroid photograph of your entry. (Polaroids are available at the general store.)

Maybe calling it a festival is a stretch, but it's certainly a group activity nonetheless. And hey, there's even prizes! The duck, ever eager, presses another paper into your hand, though this one is handwritten, in a cursive elegant hand.

Gift Giving

Someone told me that receiving a gift is a reward in itself. But if you share with others, you deserve something tangible, don't you? Try it, you might be surprised at what you receive.

[ It's hard to miss someone flopped down on the ground, drawing the the scenery in an otherwise abandoned town. It piques Kurapika's curiosity enough that he can't help but wander over, taking in whatever might be in the notebook. ]

Are you an artist?

Ah, well... More like a student artist? [ Calling himself a full-fledged artist didn't seem right... He was still studying after all. ]

That's still art in my opinion.

[ Don't mind him as he gets a closer look at what's in the notebook... ]

The scenery around here must be good for sketching.

[ Angles it so he can look better, he doesn't mind people looking. This page is a study of various flora he thought had interesting shapes. ]

Hmm, it's nice and quiet at least. Back in the city, even the parks would have people walking around everywhere.

[ Oh, he recognizes some of them from some of the books in the community center, and his gaze lingers on those. ]

That makes it difficult, I'm sure. Unless you enjoy drawing people?

I do like doing that too, but it's more difficult when you're doing it from your imagination, since you need to keep in mind certain principles, and all that.

[ He flips through where one of the drawings of a lamb. ] Like drawing another one of these, but trying to imagine them in different pose, but still trying to keep what I learned from this one. It probably won't look entirely right until I tweak it a lot...

[ It's easier to just sit down on the ground too, so Kurapika takes a second to do that so that he can get a better look at that lamb. ]

Bringing something from your imagination is difficult without a lot of practice, isn't it? [ He knows from experience... sort of. ] Do you find it rewarding, at least?

Yes, art is all about expressing what's in an artist's heart, after all.

Is it? I've never thought about it that way.

[ To him, it's always been lines and angles and brushstrokes. ]

Of course, there are pieces you just do for assignments and practice... but when you sit down to really make art with intent... it's a reflection of yourself, your ideas and the skills you've developed.

Would you say that that lamb is a reflection of yourself as well?

[aurevoirx2]

Hmmm. I would hope I'm not as helpless as a lamb. [ ... in light of the meeting yesterday. ] ... Or a sacrificial lamb.

[ He sighs quietly. ] Though maybe, comparing myself to everyone here, maybe the weakest? [ He is literally just a high schooler. Well, there's Keito-kun who's younger, but he's got height? And Beatrice-san... is American? ]

If you mean weakest due to physical strength, you can always use that to your advantage.

[ As a meticulous planner himself, Kurapika considers using one's weakness to be a strength itself. ]

You're creative enough to draw those sketches, so you should be creative enough to come up with innovative solutions to that problem.

How so? [ Tilts his head. ] Like, hiding or something?

That, or pretending to block right before dodging out of the way. You can easily feint attacks if you're quick enough.

[aurevoirx2]

Feint...? Is that like a fencing move? [ Please teach. ]

[revengier]

It's a deceptive move that can be used in hand-to-hand combat.

[ And fencing too, he assumes.

Kurapika stands up, motioning for Sora to follow suit. ]

I'll show you right now.

[aurevoirx2]

Eh? O-okay?? [ He knows it's his own fault for asking, but he tries to follow suit. It'll be good to know, right? ]

[revengier]

[ Very good to know!

Kurapika takes a few quick steps forward, seemingly launching his fist at Sora, but he pulls back at the last second and attempts to use whatever reaction he gets as an opportunity to slip right by him. ]

[ He definitely flinches at the punch, grimacing. Then, in relief, floods him when it doesn't connect. And blinks when Kurapika isn't in front of him anymore? ]

Ah, that's so fast!

[revengier]

[ He can't help but smile as he straightens out his... overalls? Probably. ]

You'll get faster as you train.

[ Of course, training takes time. But a failed feint is better than nothing at all, isn't it? ]

Try it on me.

[ Wow, embracing the country life. ]

Okay! [ He tries to swing eagerly, but swings so hard (in a complete miss) he almost falls over. ]

.... I feel like I should be more coordinated than this. [ But having good eyes isn't the same as having the motions for it? ]

[ Kurapika reaches out to catch him, but it looks like Sora has managed to catch himself, so he withdraws. ]

It takes practice. You won't be well-coordinated immediately.

[ He tries again then! Like a studious student, but it's so slow Kurapika can see it coming from a mile away... but one thing at a time... ]

[revengier]

[ At least his studiousness is appreciated! But he's slow, and so Kurapika grabs onto his wrist, though his grip isn't tight. ]
