WEEK ONE
WEEK ONE
26 Villagers
After the news from the town hall, Puffin Town might not seem as tranquil as before—if it ever did. But the sun dawns, and the rooster crows on a new week, that seems peaceful enough, for now. There's farming to be done for those who don't want to subsist off the vast canned food selection at Joja Mart, or you could take up your hand fishing or even venturing into the mines.
If you want to lay around on the grass taking count of the shapes in the clouds no one will stop you, an eager duck might even stop by to give you a pillow; but the cost of the harvest looms overhead, even if you choose not to see it.
And so too does: confetti? Monday, at precisely noon, everyone will find themselves showered with confetti from seemingly nowhere. The culprit largely seems to be the ducks, but if you're somewhere closed off like bathroom, there's no obvious instigator in sight. Though if you squint real hard, you might see the wisps of something? It's hard to see through all the colorful paper, though. Regardless, you'll soon find yourself accosted by a duck with a flyer, printed and worn:
!Festival!
The Colors You Want to See Festival!
Do you find the walls of your cottage drab? Do you want to add a special touch to make your home YOURS? Stop by the general store this week and pick up some art supplies to decorate your life! NOTE: Puffin town does not take responsibility for any damage incurred during the decorating process. Participation will be rewarded with an item from the community stockpile! Please see the event organizer in the community center to submit your polaroid photograph of your entry. (Polaroids are available at the general store.)
Maybe calling it a festival is a stretch, but it's certainly a group activity nonetheless. And hey, there's even prizes! The duck, ever eager, presses another paper into your hand, though this one is handwritten, in a cursive elegant hand.

!Gift Giving
Someone told me that receiving a gift is a reward in itself. But if you share with others, you deserve something tangible, don't you? Try it, you might be surprised at what you receive.
(( OOC: Murder proposals are due by Tuesday at 4 PM EST / 1 PM PST, for the current week's murder, but feel free to submit for later weeks if you like!))

[Since waking up here the other day, Healy has largely kept to himself. The others... They're excitable. Dramatic. Not really his speed. Nor is farming. Or ducks, for that matter. He's always felt a distinct neutrality toward Los Angeles, but at least he knew what to expect from the city. His life made sense.
He did grab himself some new clothes, at least.
Now, first thing in the morning, he's standing just inside the eastern border of the town, scrutinizing the dense fog with his hands in his pockets. He turns when he hears you come up behind him.]
I'd think twice before making a run for it, kid. Those ladies were saying it's bad news out there.
movie theater
[Healy is perusing the film selection at the movie theater when he's accosted by a rain of confetti. It startles him—a tough thing to do—and he nearly suckerpunches the duck responsible. The flyer is what stops him.
Do you want to add a special touch to make your home YOURS?]
No, I really don't.
[He tries to hand the flyer back but, oh, the duck has already taken off. He shrugs and tucks it into one of the movie shelves, then goes back to looking through the collection.]
elsewhere
[In the afternoon, Healy can be found attempting to plant some seeds at Jade Vine Farm. Does he know what he's doing? He does not! SOS!
In the evening, catch him at the bar in the saloon, sipping grape juice and scratching his head over his flip phone. Why are the buttons so small???]
movie theater.
he looks around wildly, and then his gaze lands on the older man. ]
Who the hell thought this was a good idea??
no subject
[He's unimpressed.]
Unless you're talking about the... decorating.
no subject
[ now he has to shake confetti out of his damn hair. goddammit. ]
Some of these movies look like things I watched as a kid… has this place seen a movie later than the 90s?
no subject
No wonder I haven't heard of most of these. Last I knew, it was 1977.
[Being from The Pastâ„¢ ought to rattle him more than it does, but he's already dealing with sentient ducks and interdimensional kidnapping... May as well toss time travel onto the pile.]
You looking for anything in particular?

border
[Not that there's much to see. Mio stops short as soon as as she feels another step will make her unsure of the path behind her; this has to be the border of about as far as she's willing to go.] I don't want to believe it without proof, but I don't think I've even seen any creatures come in or out from past here.
[Though she's trying as hard as possible to be polite about it, Mio's gaze keeps being drawn, sidelong, back to his face. She's studying it nearly as much as she's scrutinizing the impenetrable boundary of the town.]
no subject
[Is it definitive proof? Hell no, but he's not one to argue with what's right in front of his face.]
Doesn't make sense, but it's here. It's happening.
[His hand raises to scrub at his beard, and he spots her looking at him.]
What?
no subject
When he catches her staring, further musing on their predicament - and means of egress - pauses.]
Sorry. [She's embarrassed - because of course she should be. Mio rubs at the back of her neck, looking for the words to explain.] I've only seen someone with a face like yours twice before.
[Three times, maybe, if you count the cursory look at the bald man the other day at the town hall.]
no subject
[He's certainly not about to go risking the fog. Best to fully assess their situation first.
He frowns at her explanation, perplexed.]
A face like mine? What do you mean?

Saloon
Those are probably bugged. Magic or no magic, those women aren't above surveillance if you ask me.
no subject
I doubt I'll be using it much. Not really a gadgets guy. I just want to know how to use the damn thing.
[Seems an important skill, considering it's one of the few items they were pointedly given. He wiggles the phone at Walter.]
You know you can send messages? The keypad's got letters.
no subject
[Walter gives Healy a confused look.]
Have you not seen one before?
[Please don't be another magic LARPer.]
no subject
[He illustrates with his hands—he's talking about the big brick phones from the 70s.]
Neat that this one fits in your pocket, but it's too small. You've got to have tiny little thumbs to work these buttons. And god help you if you're farsighted.
[Which he is, as Walter might pick up from him holding the screen at arm's length so he can read it. RIP.]

Don't worry. I'm just taking a look.
[ Seeing if anything is going to come for them, etc. ]
Is that why you're here, too?
no subject
[So, yes. There's a pause before he continues.]
This is a cute town. This?
[He jerks a thumb at the fog ahead of them.]
Not so cute. It's good to remember that. I don't want to get too comfortable.
[Not that there's any actual risk of that, but still. The fog is a good reminder.]
no subject
[ She has a hard time calling this place "cute", mostly because of...everything from yesterday, but she gets it. ]
Any guesses on what's out there?

I'm only here to look. Hasn't hearing it's bad news made you curious?
[He can only assume that's why he's out here too.]
no subject
Curious, not so much. It's a reality check. The worst thing we could do is get too comfortable here.

What, you're not looking to get lost in the ominous mist? Seems like a fun idea for a weekend.
[ No, it doesn't. ]
no subject
Sure, if you want to test that out, go right ahead. Report back. Someone's going out there sooner or later.

[That said, it’s not like Niles is making any motions to dash over either. He’ll just stand a short distance away from Healy, arms crossed as he peers into the distance.]
no subject
[Healy tips his head from side to side, considering.]
I don't think it's that clever. If it was, they're come up with a better lie.
no subject
But someone's put that fog in place for a reason, and I doubt it's because they think it matches our quaint little town.
