Human sacrifices to bring about a bountiful harvest originate from various pagan religious, but particularly the practices surrounding the Norse faith.

It's less about the blood and more about the act of murdering someone to satisfy a higher being. You can't substitute things like it's a recipe from a poorly made cookbook. And that's buying into the plants grown through murder premise already, which is already a questionable choice...
