[ The forest is part of the area where the fog might cut them off - most of the village is surrounded by farmland that allows for a good view, but the forest is adjacent to the village on the west side and venturing deep enough into it will cut you off, indeed.
But you have not ventured that deep, as you find out in your chase. In fact, you've been led in a neat little semi-circle - the trees get fewer again and before you know it, you find yourself in front of the mysterious little hut that has suddenly joined your cul de sac of farms!
There is no sign of the sentient apple left, but there is a final page of notebook on the path to the hut. It's the same cursive as before: ]
Chronicle 556
There is an alternative to the dark temptation of blood magic: perhaps this is a way in which the universe bends its arc towards a balance of the powers. Love and Hate are two sides of the same coin: both are born of strong emotions, and the movement of the heart is the movement of magic. (One day, I will look into whether Junimo are really born of the stars, or whether they may in the end be born of our own hearts, closer to home.) The pattern wasn’t seen at first, in all the hubbub of the harvest and of wedding ceremonies – it’s not so often even in a remote place like this that all weddings take place at the same time of year, but Puffin Town is fond of its festivals, and of course the blooming of the flowers, the fruit of the fertility of the soil, and the Flower Dance Festival is often attended by many soon-to-be-betrothed. With so many weddings in the late summer, it was only a matter of time before the villagers noticed that it coincided so perfectly with the greatest instance of the Asteral bloom; and the more weddings, the more fruitful the plants, and the more Junimos would come out of the forest. It was a positive cycle after all the darkness, making it revered among those here, like a kiss to lift a curse in so many of their favorite fairy tales. The weddings themselves don’t have anything to do with the seeding of magic, of course. Weddings are merely a formality, but formalities and the acceptance of society can go a long way towards uplifting and intensifying existing feelings.
Investigation end!

Maybe I’m getting sentimental at this age.
