TRIAL

Once again, the investigations conclude -- though they're more ponderous this time, burdened by the number and knowledge of additional deaths, and the awareness that there's limited means of dealing with them -- and once again the ducks gather everyone at the back of the JojaMart along with Makima's wagon, Adela's quiet, the pile of evidence.

Everyone trundles into the loading bay, which isn't all that much livelier than before, penned in by stacks of shelves and crating; but at least it's functional, overly well-lit and there's tea to while away the time discussing murders and mayhem.

As the loading bay door slides closed, you're left with a wagonful of evidence, a double handful of murders and the knowledge that time is ticking down -- for everyone.

What could it look like if you mix them all together?

According to the lab texts, there's an equal chance for any of the effects to take place. Explosion, corrosion, poison, or growth.

That seems rather inefficient, but I suppose if you just wanted someone dead...

My question is... why blue? I don't think anyone here would drink something someone else offered to them at night when, um. Things are the way they are.

Even if they didn't know what it would do, I don't think anyone we found would be that...

And I haven't heard anything about a weapon that might have been covered in it so far, but maybe...

Was anyone drinking alcohol last night? You could likely have disguised a liquid of that color in some sort of cocktail without arousing suspicion...

If they were, it wasn't at the saloon. Erika and I were the only ones there before we all fell asleep.

... so perhaps they really were trusting that they could coax someone into drinking something that looked so suspicious.

Only an idiot would leave that sort of thing to chance.

But something tells me they didn't get the chance to use either one.

It would seem as though they may have been confronted before that.

Maybe Dongrang was the one who made the poison?

I think it's highly likely. He worked in a clinical setting, after all. It's not a stretch to imagine he had experience with chemistry.

But, uh... what about the color? I, um... couldn't find any signs of poison on him, even though I tried looking...

[ maybe it's a poison that just puts him to sleep? but if they're lethal, surely it must leave some mark... ]

I'm thinking they had to change plans. The lab is a mess.

So um... what you're saying is that someone drew Dongrang towards the tower, tried to force him some sort of drink and, when it didn't work, initiated a fight which ended with Dongrang being killed?

[ he tilts his head, thinking. ]

And then this person, uh... took the body and set it up like he had fallen asleep? Maybe?

Dongrang-san was a scientist, was he not? There's also the possibility that he was surprised by someone else who had the same idea while he was using the lab.

You mean that he might have wanted to kill someone, too?!

After what happened last week...would he really?

It's merely a theory, but one I unfortunately don't think we can rule out given the use of the laboratory for these crimes.

But the laboratory is also a good vantage spot, isn't it? You probably have a good view of anyone that could be coming. If someone had died with poison, he would have also been our first suspect...

[ but he nods in agreement. it's... not a theory that they should discard. ]

It'd certainly be ironic enough.

Whoever used the lab, it's likely one realized what the other was planning and it turned into a struggle.

So I'm guessing that Dongrang was knocked back, hit his head, and that was enough for his opponent to get the advantage to kill him?

I'm not sure he'd have wanted that...I don't know know if he would, but since there were so many suspecting him it'd be dangerous to do anything, right?

[It's a somewhat naive train of thought, to think that'd have dissuaded Dongrang from trying anything, but still! Point is, there was a very good chance he'd have been suspected again if the slightest inkling of proof pointed at him]

What if he was awake because he was the intended victim instead? And he was using the lab to try to concoct something to defend himself...

I think we should consider this possibility as well. The broken glass... maybe it's a result of dropping something out of surprise because someone else showed up.

[He nods.]

I doubt he would have expected to run into anyone else. He likely would have been focused entirely on his work.

Especially when crafting something like poison. That would take full concentration, just to ensure you got it right.
