For some people, sacrificing the life of another is easy. Or, even if it is difficult, they are able to justify it if it would benefit them. Or if they can make it acceptable in their head that other life is worth less than their own.

Or perhaps they simply have more lives they think they can exchange for a shorter sacrifice that seems more humane.
